A winter poem for Danielle:

And what happens when all our hopes
have fallen away and
guilt comes in like a glove?

Do they scatter the ground or into the wind?
Do our roots hold the memory of their return?

So should we stand,
bare and brittle,
bark to the frost?

Or do we smoulder in slipped warmth,
fragile in fur?

I tend to think that you and me are tress,
holding hands under the dirt,
waiting for out birthday months…

A creative writing teacher at San Jose State used to say about cliches:  “Avoid them like the plague.”  Then he’d lauch at his own joke.  THe class laughed along with him, but I always thought cliches got a bum rap.  Because, often, they’re dead on.  But the aptness of the cliche saying is overshadowed by the nature of saying as cliche.  For example, the “elephant in the room” syaing.  Cliches are often right.
